Mint 13 Maya is getting OLD , LTS until 2017 , but it is aging .

Mint 17.2 is the current

the current Chromium might not be all that compatible with the older Mint 13 OS
are you using the debain esr build
or the new google build
Linux

If I remember rightly I installed it from the Mint repository. Yes Mint 13 is old now, but it's still supported so I tend to leave it alone while it works.

I used to use Chrome when I had a Windows laptop, but these days I use Safari.

I prefer using Chrome to Safari on my iPhone and iPad. Safari has a memory leak that causes the browser to lock up on some sites I access. For my Windows computers, I use both Firefox and Chrome. I use Firefox when I need my Firefox add-ons. Otherwise, I use Chrome with no add-ons for lean execution. The bad news is that Chrome is dropping support for Vista and XP on April 2016.

Google tracks every keystroke.
I'm on Chrome now, haven't used IE for years.

I do use duckduckgo lots because they don't track.

Still, I get a lot of freezes here using chrome.
I used to know everything.

I'm using Mint 18 Sarah Cinnamon version now because my hard disk failed so I had to fit a new one and reload everything, no point in reloading an obsolete operating system. Google Chrome works fine on that.

Regarding Chrome on Mint 13 whatever was causing the problem was something Google had done to it, Chromium worked fine. I still tend to use Firefox a lot of the time though.

I don't know what sorts of sites you access, but I've never had that happen to me.
