Ryanair gender pay gap

Postby Polgara69 » Wed Apr 04, 2018 8:16 am

https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... e-industry

I looked this up because I heard about it on the news yesterday but was unsure what it meant. It seems that there is a massive gap (72%) because there are only 8 women pilots but the lower paid cabin crew are mostly female. I'm not sure why it's a problem myself. As long as the female pilots are being paid the same as the men and same for the cabin crew, then what's the problem? If they did a gender pay gap at my workplace, it would be a big gap because there are about 200 male drivers and 8 female. But we all get paid the same hourly rate. It's not my companies fault that more women don't apply to be bus drivers is it?

Yes.... same job, same pay. Important to ensure that women have the same opportunities to advance to higher pay grades.

I will probably get shot down in flames for this, but yes, you should be paid the same amount for doing the same job.

But the statistics are a nonsense. Whilst women are the ones having a baby there will always be fewer of them in higher paid more skilled or more demanding jobs. It's a myth that you can have it all for most women. I say most of course because there are some who buck this trend. But it's only common sense to accept that someone who has lots of other family priorities and who takes several career breaks to have babies is going to be a few steps behind someone who has the opportunity to focus solely on their career. I think it's a difficult choice for most women. I've seen some try to 'have it all' and usually something gives. In a couple of cases it has been their marriage.

Incidentally, the highest pay differences have come from the construction industry. How many women builders do you know?

That's an interesting point. The Ryanair figures have no useful significance as the apparent gap comes from comparing widely different roles where you would expect to find pay differences regardless of who was in the job, whereas in the construction industry if you apply the same measure then you would expect women to come near the top as they are more likely to be found in the higher paid technical roles such as architecture and civil engineering.

I always find it highly amusing and ironic that the one industry where women are paid significantly higher than men is the porn film industry.

Because men would pay to do the job?

It's a more difficult job for men. Apparently not many could hack it. You can't tell if a woman has 'wood problems'.

True, but they will be far outnumbered by male builders. I suppose it's averaged out across the board.

I deviate slightly, but is the key issue the pay gap or lack of opporunity for both genders equally.

Porn industry? Surely the female longevity and reliabilty correctly means more pay? But I wonder if that is born out on payday?

I am amazed. Had my welfare meeting this morning and afterwards was talking about this with my manager and in my bus company the woman actually get paid more than the men. The gap is 9.1% higher

Perhaps there are more women in better-paid management roles than there are drivers? You need to get yourself on that ladder Polgara... unless of course you love the job you do because that's worth a LOAD of money.
