Street harrassment and risk for women

Postby louise_heels » Wed Oct 11, 2017 12:18 pm

Not sure where is the right place for this, but this board seems as good as any. Not sure what I think about this article, it suggests women walk less because they perceive themselves to be at risk when they walk, or are fearful for their safety. The article claims that there is a financial cost to all this "not walking" as well as the cost to women's health and perceptions of safety. Not sure how much of this is reality and how much perception but its an interesting starting point.

The comment BTL are interesting, people sharing their experiences and some fears. Thoughts?

I'm just glad I don't live in the city. I take my walks on our rural road, mostly neighbors that drive by, if at all. I think it is mostly a city issue.

It's worse than when I went to Uni.
Rachel's campus has Emergency Boxes all around, and there's a walking escort service you can call.
It's not just the local criminal element but other male students you have to be wary of.
Their learning experience is less social and more internet based, where the worst of the worst is readily available.
Do you really think it's getting worse? that's one claim but I wonder if it is actually the reality or heightened fears? Also, maybe more incidents get reported these days, whereas years ago, generally they went unreported?

I guess that's possible, but I don't remember talking about it, knowing there was a problem out there. I do think the men were less worldly, not as exposed to the internet, more "innocent".
One of the things that really bothers me about the Harvey Weinstein revelations - why didn't the women talk to each other about the issue? That's certainly how we used to handle "problem" men - there were always some guys you shouldn't be alone in a room with - and we'd let each other know and keep an eye on each other. It seems incredible to me that in all his years of abuse there weren't two women that confided in each other and both had similar experiences, and that set off alarm bells. I guess in that industry it's par for the course.
You could be right there. the internet has certainly had plenty of unforeseen consequences. On Harvey Weinstein I'm sure you are right. I heard the tape last night, surely people knew he was a creep?!

Perhaps it’s is a bit different where I live. I know that being a man , I do not directly experience walking around in the same way as women.... but I worked for many years ..as did my better half in a female dominated profession. We both , regularly , mixed with nurses professionally and socially in newport, Cardiff and Bristol and both of us concur that this topic of conversation has never arisen. Among all the women we have socialised and worked with this has never been a topic of conversation in the staff room or common room.

I can't imagine it's worse nowadays.
I didn't go to university, I went to art college and the women were on an equal footing from the start. If a university is an unsafe place, the management should be dealing with it.
It's pretty unacceptable on most building sites to catcall too.

Can't say I have really experienced this first hand I tend to live/stay in quieter areas, but I think it is definitely an issue that needs tackling. No one should feel uncomfortable walking out.

Agree with that Julie Anne, sadly it's all to common I think. In that situation it's very easy to become fearful imo

Queuing for a taxi after a night out can be a bit uncomfortable with drunk guys around making comments and being boisterous

I walked home from the cinema alone in the dark earlier. No problem. I wouldn't walk across the common at night because I'd be out of sight and out of earshot, but a man would be taking a chance doing that too. I don't walk down narrow side streets with poor lighting if I can help it but the worry is of robbery.

So you see no correlation between men sitting at home behind their computers watching the degradation of women and those doing it on the street?

If I am walking behind a woman at night on a deserted street I will always cross over and then overtake so I am keeping a healthy distance between me and her and she can keep me in her sights. I think that only fair as she would not feel comfortable hearing footsteps behind her.

Back in the 80's when I had a long shaggy perm I was walking down the road and a builders van coming from behind tooted me and wolf whistled, then as it passed I heard one of them shout "fook me it's a geezer"

I got my hair cut that afternoon.

I walk lots of places too but I don't like walking alone after dark at all. When the evenings draw in (like now) is not my favourite time of the year. I guess lots of women (and men for that mater) feel the same?

Where I live (in Sweden), it's not so bad but of course I would be wary if I walked in the city during nighttime... As long as there's people around I don't feel like it's a big problem for me.

Another one of the mysteries of FF......I hate it when my threads get hijacked by reasoned debate and actual opinions when all I wanted was fantasy fodder too....perhaps you should repost it in motoring where the scenario could include repeatedly trying to start a car in your heels (what else!) and being harassed by a miniature man who you could crush under your spike heels that you wear to leave marks on wooden floors before getting the AA out to actually start the car (Too much choke luv) so you can run over some small animal. Hope this helps
